Police Investigating Florida Motorcycle Accident That Killed One Man and Injured Another
Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that one man was killed and another injured in a recent motorcycle accident at John Young Parkway and Blackstone Drive in Orange County. They say that a 30-year-old Kissimmee man suffered fatal injuries and a 36-year-old Orlando man was seriously injured when their motorcycles were forced off the road by a white van. The investigation is still underway, but troopers say that the two motorcycles and the van were northbound on John Young when the van’s driver attempted to move into the inside lane. The maneuver cut off the riders, forcing them into the median where they lost control of their motorcycles.
Orange County Man Arrested in Road Rage Incident
Osceola County deputies recently arrested an Orange County man in connection with a road rage incident. Deputies say that the 37-year-old suspect was southbound on Poinciana Boulevard near Trafalgar Boulevard about 8:40 p.m. when he drove behind another vehicle and began flashing his headlights. They say that the suspect then pulled alongside the other car, rolled down his window and began swearing at the other driver and asking why he was driving so slowly. The exchange led to the two drivers getting into an argument, which resulted in the suspect getting out of his car and pounding on the other driver’s door while screaming and threatening to kill him, according to the arrest report.

Area Florida Businesses Tired of Waiting for State Ban on Texting While Driving Enact Their Own Ban
Although state lawmakers have not yet passed legislation banning texting while driving, some Florida businesses and non-profit organizations have enacted their own rules preventing employees, students and others from sending and reading texts while behind the wheel. Our state remains one of only six states without laws prohibiting drivers from sending or reading text messages while driving despite overwhelming evidence that drivers who send and read texts are at substantially higher risk for causing and being involved in accidents. James O. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury attorneys strongly support a texting ban, but, despite numerous bills introduced in recent years, Florida lawmakers have not yet made any of these bills into laws.
Florida Legislators Should Reconsider Medical Malpractice Damage Caps
There has been a lot of discussion in the media recently on the benefits of limits on the damages that medical malpractice victims can receive in court awards. This discussion is largely fueled by lobbyists and publicists for the insurance and hospital industries who say that damage caps are necessary in order to prevent medical practitioners, healthcare facilities and patients from being punished due to a small minority of negligent individuals and facilities. They say that caps are necessary to keep malpractice insurance premiums affordable for doctors and healthcare facilities and help prevent doctors from moving their practices to other states.
Jury Orders Florida Company to Pay $10 Million in Damages in Lawsuit
A jury in Missouri has awarded an injured man $10 million in a lawsuit stemming from an electrocution accident that left him badly injured. In July 2008, the man was working on a heat pump manufactured by FHP Manufacturing Co. in Tallahassee, Fla., when he came in contact with an exposed wire on the pump. The contact sent at least 480 volts through the man’s body, knocking him from a ladder and badly injuring him. The man and his personal injury attorney filed a lawsuit against FHP Manufacturing in Jackson County Circuit Court after the accident, and the jury recently awarded him $9.97 million in damages.
Florida Man Faces Theft and Elder Abuse Charges After Stealing From Grandmother
Orlando police say that a Seminole County man stole more than $125,000 from his grandmother and went on a shopping spree. Investigators report that the 23-year-old suspect has a substance abuse problem and convinced his grandmother that he owed many thousands of dollars in court fees related to his addiction. They say that the man constructed an elaborate scheme to steal from his 78-year-old grandmother and told her that the funds were necessary to prevent him from being incarcerated. The victim told police that she gave her grandson nearly $180,000 before she became suspicious.
Salmonella Illnesses Prompt Peanut Butter Recall
An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) into a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 29 people in 18 states has resulted in a peanut butter recall for national retailer Trader Joe’s. The CDC and FDA investigation found that the retailer’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter was the likely source of the food borne illnesses. The FDA recently released a statement that said that the FDA, CDC and the State of California alerted Trader Joe’s officials about their investigation’s findings, which prompted the retailer to pull the product from stores across the country.
