360000 Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp Recalled
A recent recall affected popular children’s lamp due to a defect that causes the lamp to catch fire. This article reports that models of Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps were recalled after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission learned that the lamp’s manufacturer had received nine reports of problems with the lamp. The Discovery Kids Lamp recall occurred on February 9 after reports of at least seven of the lamps catching fire. The fires reportedly caused at least three separate incidents of property damage and smoke inhalation injuries to one child.
Prescription Drug Deaths Continue to Rise
Millions of Floridians take prescription medication to reduce the effects of countless medical conditions. Pharmaceutical companies spend billions in marketing this or that drug in magazines, television, billboards and other outlets telling consumers how effective the drug is at alleviating a wide range of symptoms. Feds Cite Multiple Safety Violations against Disney
An article published recently in the Orlando Sentinel reported that Walt Disney World has been cited for multiple workplace safety violations and faces fines up to $44,000 after a July monorail accident. The accident claimed the life of a 21-year-old Disney World employee on July 5 of last year and resulted in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration citing Disney for one “serious” safety violation. Officials say the accident occurred when a monorail train was moving in reverse during a track switch and backed into another train, killing the driver of the train.
Toyota Orders Worldwide Prius Recall
This article describes the Toyota Motor Corporation’s increasing recall problems in the United States and other markets around the world with the company’s recent announcement of recalls of many of the company’s hybrid models. The Toyota Prius is the largest target of the recall, but the recall also affects other hybrid models. The recall includes 437,000 total vehicles for brake problems that owners have been reporting since the 2010 Prius models went on sale in May 2009.
Separate Florida Pedestrian Accidents Claim Two Lives
The media over the last several months has focused on the fact that Florida leads the nation in pedestrian accidents every year. An article from WBMM News 13 reports that two people were struck and killed recently in two separate pedestrian accidents in Florida, adding to the state’s ignominious reputation as the most dangerous place in the country for pedestrians.
Man Killed in Wrong Way Accident
The Orlando Sentinel reports that a man died when attempting to avoid a head-on collision with a truck driving the wrong way. The 40-year-old DeLand victim was driving his 1998 Nissan SUV westbound on State Road 44 when he saw a Ford truck coming toward him on the wrong side of the curved road. Florida Highway Patrol officials say that the truck was traveling east in the westbound lanes, and when the vehicles entered the curve, the Nissan’s driver swerved to avoid hitting the truck head-on.
Three Vehicle Trucking Accident in Ocala Sends One Person to Hospital
Ocala.com reports that a three vehicle trucking accident on Interstate 75 early on the morning of December 1, 2009, sent one person to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was a semi truck loaded with 150 Christmas trees. When the article was published, troopers were not yet certain about the cause of the auto accident, but they believe that the accident began when a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck broke down in the right lane of I-75.
Florida Hit and Run Accidents on the Rise
This article in the Hometown News reports that Florida hit-and-run accidents are on the rise, and one victim is trying to understand how a person could hit him with a vehicle and then flee the scene to avoid responsibility. His ordeal began on Nov. 12 when he was riding his motorcycle to an Ormond Beach restaurant to have dinner with his father and brother. He was attempting to turn into the restaurant’s parking lot when the driver of a dark colored Jeep Grand Cherokee drove onto Clyde Morris from Coquina Point right into his path. With another car on his right side, the motorcyclist had nowhere to go to avoid the accident.
Two Injured when Car Slams into Restaurant
The Orlando Sentinel reports a car hit the exterior of the Golden Corral restaurant in Altamonte Springs on State Road 434 south of State Road 436 with sufficient force to knock down one of the restaurant’s walls, injuring a husband and wife having lunch.
Faulty Brakes on Prius Models create Another Quality Problem for Prius
The New York Times reports that Toyota’s problems with quality and reliability have taken another blow after the Japanese government told the world’s largest automaker to launch an investigation on the brakes of their popular Prius models. The company is still reeling from the biggest recall in its history regarding well-publicized accelerator problems that can cause gas pedals on many Toyota models to stick and accelerate out of control. This new development with brakes on the Toyota Prius represents another possible black mark on Toyota’s safety record.
